The Lok Raj Samiti in Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra led a militant demonstration on the issue of right to food and employment on the occasion of International Human Rights Day on 10th December. Comrades of the Regional Committee of the CGPI participated in this demonstration.

The streets of Bhiwandi resounded with the slogan shouting by working men and women in the demonstration. These slogans were – “Ration supply is our right and we will not rest unless this is made available!”, “Employment is our right and we will not rest unless we get it!”, “How will we get it? We will get it by fighting for it!” More than a thousand people from more than 45 villages had come to voice their demands.

People started gathering at 10 in the morning at the pre-decided venue. People were very angry about the irregularities in the schemes announced by the government. They then marched to the court of the Tehsildar shouting militant slogans.

The demonstrators forced the Tehsildar to meet a delegation of 45 people, one from each of village. The Tehsildar announced that, “he will call a meeting of the ration shop owners and issue them a warning.” He accepted that a watchdog committee elected by the Gram Sabha would be constituted. The delegates warned that if the ration supplies are not proper then they will not remain silent.

The second issue of the demonstration was the lack of employment under the Rural Employment scheme. The Tehsildar instructed the concerned officer that they should assist the villagers to open zero credit bank accounts and should help anyone looking for employment to get work.

Some young comrades from SUCI had also joined the demonstration.
