A meeting was held on 23rd June to discuss the situation in our country and experience of the comrades in the election campaign. Comrades of the region participated in this meeting; a majority of them were youth who had been active in the campaign. The Party had fielded a candidate on the platform of Navnirman - a revolutionary alternative. The Party’s general secretary, Com. Lal Singh, initiated the discussion which drew active participation from the comrades, who raised some questions and elaborated other points from their own experience.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited India between June 25-27, 2019. This was the first visit of a senior most official of the US adminstration after the return to power of the BJP with a massive majority in the recent elections. During this visit, Pompeo held discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The visit was publicly announced as aimed at resolving problems in Indo-US relations, and strengthening the strategic military alliance between the two countries.
The US is continuing to escalate its military and economic pressure on Iran. The resolute defiance of the Iranian state and its people to these attacks and their courageous stand in defence of the interests of their country are being met with even more arrogant and war-mongering response of the US.
The 9th Plenum of the Central Committee of Communist Ghadar Party was convened during 1-2 June, 2019. The Plenum analysed the results of the 17th Lok Sabha elections and summed up the work of the Party in recent months, including our participation in the elections.
The Plenum took note of the enormous amount of money spent on these elections, which are said to be the most expensive election ever held in any country, with the lion’s share being spent on the BJP campaign. The use of modern technology —TV as well as social media — to spread lies among the people has reached an unprecedented scale. The entire election campaign was marked by political debate being reduced to the lowest level. Hate speeches, rabid war mongering against Pakistan, openly communal and divisive propaganda, accusations and counter-accusations of corruption dominated the political discourse. The unparalleled state terror in Kashmir, and the bombing of Pakistan following the terrorist attack in Pulwama were used to project Narendra Modi as the strongman capable of crushing the enemies of India.
Iran continues to boldly resist the economic blockade and military encirclement by the US. It is fighting to defeat the US imperialists’ attempts to isolate Iran, following the US’ unilateral abrogation of the JCPOA and the re-imposition of sanctions.
India is called the world’s most populous democracy. It is held up in contrast with China and Pakistan, as a country in which “free and fair elections” are regularly held. The fact that several political parties compete for seats in the central and state legislative bodies is presented as proof that democracy is thriving in our country.
Life experience, however, keeps exposing the fact that elections in the existing system are neither fair nor free by any standard.
The Supreme Court of India is the highest judicial authority in the country. The Chief Justice of India (CJI) occupies the highest seat in this highest judicial authority. The charge of sexual harassment against the CJI, by a former court employee who was posted in his house, is an extremely serious matter. The way the Supreme Court has responded to this charge and dismissed it in just 15 days has exposed the ugly face of the entire judicial system.
Activists of the Communist Ghadar Party of India organized a padayatra through the streets and lanes of Sanjay Colony, a slum colony situated in Okhla Industrial Estate, Phase 2, on the morning of May 1, 2019.
Millions of workers across the world poured onto the streets on International Workers’ Day, 1 May. The anti-worker character of capitalist states was again exposed when the May Day rallies of workers faced brutal repression by the police in France, Turkey, Russia, Indonesia, Philippines and many other countries.
Hundreds of workers, men and women, gathered at Adarsh Vidyalaya, Shell Colony, Chembur to celebrate Mayday in Mumbai. The Trade Union Sanyukta Kriti Samiti which has organized the meeting, declared that it would continue to take up the struggles of minimum wages, privatization, contract workers, anganwadi and other issues. It had shown its international solidarity by supporting the struggle of workers across the world.
In spite of the Police giving Elections as an excuse to refuse permissions for Mayday meetings, workers gathered under their trade unions and held militant Mayday rallies in all factories and work places all over Tamilnadu. Gate meetings were organized by the respective unions at the VHS Hospital – Adyar, at the Chennai airport (Air Corporation Employees Union ACEU, Air India Employees Union), Bhadra Cargo Complex (Bhadra Workers Union), at the Cantonment Board office at St.Thomas Mount (Cantonment Board Employees Union).
The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) management has planned to reduce the retirement age from 60 to 58 years. It has also planned to offer voluntary retirement scheme to all workers aged 50 and above. Both these measures will lead to loss of jobs for over 54,000 workers, which amounts to 31% of the workforce of BSNL. Both these measures are being justified to reduce the losses BSNL has been incurring for the last few years.
The Modi government replaced the earlier crop insurance schemes with the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) in February 2016 claiming that the new scheme would be instrumental in ending farmers’ woes. Three years later, it is time to assess how far farmers’ interests have been advanced by this scheme.
About 50 soldiers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been killed in a suicide car bombing attack in Kashmir on 14th February, 2019.The attack took place on a heavily guarded highway that serves as a key supply route for troops stationed in the Kashmir valley. There were about 2,500 soldiers travelling in the convoy and more than 40 were on the bus that was hit.
The Communist Ghadar Party of India condemns this dastardly terrorist attack. We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of all the CRPF men who have lost their lives.
