A meeting of Hyundai /Kia trade union representatives from different countries was held in Bratislava, Slovakia September 14-16 to discuss the strengthening of unity of workers of this Korean multinational in different parts of the world.
The meeting discussed the conditions of the Hyundai workers in Tamilnadu, in particular the ongoing struggle for the reinstatement of workers who had been dismissed following the formation of their union, the Hyundai Motor India Employees' Union (HMIEU), at the Sri Perambadur plant in 2007.
Representatives of trade unions representing Hyundai/Kia workers in Korea, Czech Republic, Slovk Republic, India, Turkey, Germany and the US participated in the meeting. The Korean Metal Workers Union (KMWU) delegation gave a detailed report of the problems facing workers in unionising, in security of employment, as well as working conditions. Delegates from other countries too reported on the state of affairs in the plants in their countries. It was decided to strengthen the networking and solidarity between workers in different plants of the company in different countries.
