On 5 November construction workers organised under the banner of “Construction Workers Coordination Committee” and “Construction and Toll Booth Workers Union” marched from Sion Railway Station to Bandra and held a demonstration at the Office of Labour Commissioner in Bandra.

Over 10000 construction workers participated in the demonstration. The government levies a cess in the name of construction workers, which has grown to over 3000 Crore, and is lying with the government unutilized. Instead of using these funds for the welfare of the construction workers, the government wants to divert it for other activities. The construction workers are bitterly opposing this attempt by the government and are demanding that the funds be used for their welfare.

Construction workers have advanced the following demands:

  • Life insurance policy must be implemented
  • Construction workers should be given a Diwali bonus of Rs. 10000
  • Construction workers should be given a grant of Rs 5 lakh and another 10 Lakh as interest-free loan for construction of their house
  • Pension scheme must be implemented for construction workers
  • Construction workers welfare board must have representative from the construction workers union
  • Implement Provident Fund and Gratuity Scheme
  • Construction workers should be paid dearness allowance
  • Children of construction workers should be given education grant
  • Construction workers should be made beneficiaries under the Food Security Act
