Meeting of the Joint Action Committee of Workers’ Associations

The meeting of the Joint Action Committee of Workers’ Associations was held in Dadar, Mumbai on 28th January 2016. AITUC, CITU, INTUC, Kamgar Ekta Committee, HMS, Dharmrajya Kamgar Sangathan, AIUTUC, AICCTU, Kamgar Aghadi, All India Bank Employees Federation, Bharatiya Kamgar Sena and other associations participated in it.
All organisations participating in the meeting presented their points of view. It was clear from the speeches of all that the BJP – led state government was adopting policies that were increasing the exploitation of workers and peasants and filling the coffers of the capitalists. The government is working to change all labour laws and policies to benefit the capitalists. It is working to change labour laws to increase the practice of contract labour. In the name of “Make in India”, the state government is inviting capitalists from all over the world to exploit the labour of our young people. The Prime Minister, Mr Narendra Modi, is calling capitalists from around the world to India with the assurance of cheap labour and ease of doing business here, so that they can openly loot the people to increase their profits. The Indian state is involved in increasing communal violence, state terrorism and attacks on the basis of community and caste so that people may not remain united to fight against this increased capitalist onslaught.
The meeting was called to intensify the struggle against capitalist attacks and to step up the movement in a big way. It was decided in the meeting to organise a big rally in Mumbai focussing on the demands of the workers on 20th April 2016. To make this rally a success, propaganda would begin all over the city and elsewhere from 21st February 2016 onwards. Meetings – big and small would also be organised all over Maharashtra for this purpose in this period. It was decided to do this in order to increase the consciousness of working people all over the state. The meeting targeted a presence of at least 150,000 workers in Mumbai for the Rally on April 20th 2016.
The following demands would be raised in the course of the campaign to be conducted all over the state: (1) Equal pay for equal work, (2) Regularise of all contract workers, (3) Make Rs 18,000/- per month as the minimum wage (4) Stop changing labour laws to benefit the capitalists, and (5) Cancel the anti-worker recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission, etc.

Parties of the capitalist class claim that there is no
alternative to the program of globalisation, liberalisation
and privatisation. The truth is thatthere IS an alternative.

The alternative is to reorient the economy to fulfil people’s
needs instead of fulfilling capitalist greed. This is the
program for the Navnirman of India.
