Completely disregarding the principle of respecting the independence and sovereignty of countries and people, on 12th December 2012, the USA has recognized the “national coalition of Syrian revolutionary forces” (the opposition) as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people. US President Obama said the newly created “Syrian Opposition Council” is now “inclusive enough, is reflective and representative enough” to be considered eligible for American support. This follows a protracted period of covert and overt assistance to the opposition forces which are trying to overthrow the Syrian government.

Earlier, in November 2012, the British Foreign Secretary Hague made it clear that the governments of Britain, the US and other NATO countries are intent on regime change in Syria and are openly working to unify the various groups that opposed to the Syrian government, so as to make them a more effective instrument of their aims. In August 2012, it was revealed that US President Obama had personally signed an order for US intelligence agencies to give covert aid to anti-government forces in Syria. Thus the Anglo – American imperialists have played a major role in the establishment of the “Syrian Opposition Council” which the US president is recognising now.

Many countries such as Russia and China have also pointed out that the recognition of the Syrian Opposition Council” as the sole representative of the Syrian people is also a violation of the Geneva communiqué of June 2012, which called for a transitional government following a common Syrian national dialogue. At that time, the special UN mediator Mr Kofi Annan had said that a Syrian government "could include members of the present government and the opposition and other groups and shall be formed on the basis of mutual consent". It was stressed by various countries at that time that the decisions regarding who could represent Syria should be taken by the Syrian people themselves, without outside interference.

The Assad government in Syria is a close ally of Iran, and it is seen as a major impediment in the way of the plans of US imperialism and its allies to strengthen their domination of the strategic and oil-rich region of West Asia. The Anglo-American imperialists and their allies are training their sights on Iran and Syria because the governments in both these countries have strongly opposed their imperialist designs in the region of West Asia. The Anglo-American imperialists are striving might and main to force “regime changes” in these countries and bring in regimes that are more favourably disposed towards them.

The Anglo- American imperialists and their allies hollowly claim that it is necessary to intervene in Syria in order to support “democracy” against a “dictatorial” regime. The point of principle, however, is that the kind of political system a country must have or the nature of a country’s government and its policies are strictly matters for the people of that country to decide upon, without foreign interference. This principle is being repeatedly violated by the imperialists. Moreover, the imperialists have openly supported several openly dictatorial regimes in the past, ranging from the Shah of Iran to Pinochet of Chile. The Western media has also revealed that many of the constituents of the Opposition Council now being recognised by the USA have engaged in mass killings of political opponents and participated in attacks on the Syrian civilian population as well, and some of them have previously been declared to be “terrorists” by the US and its allies. This clearly demonstrates that the Anglo- American imperialists are totally unprincipled and are stopping at nothing to force a regime change in Syria.

The Anglo- American imperialists have no right to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, on any pretext and their latest actions in Syria need to be unequivocally condemned as well.
