I am writing to thank you for carrying the informative and incisive article commemorating the centenary of the World War I, with the by line `Lessons of the working class and people’.  This is a very timely article at the time when the world continues to teeter on the brink of yet another global conflict on a scale not seen in history.  This war could well be a full fledged nuclear holocaust with destruction assured for all of mankind.  At the heart of this is the continued drive of the big powers for a division of the world that would serve their interests.

While there are fissures in the imperialist camp, with the uni-polar world that arose at the end of the cold war 2 decades ago no longer being tenable, a new equilibrium is yet to be achieved.  Regions of the world that are reserves of precious resources such as oil, and minerals are precisely the ones where the imperialist activities at their worst. The prevailing conditions have brought immense destruction to several countries in the middle-east and in regions where the western imperialist powers come into contradiction with their main contender for the place in the sun, namely China.  The modus operandi of the imperialist countries includes direct military intervention on the one hand, ground troops and aeriel bombardment being part of their method, and instigating various factions and engineering civil war on the other.  This comes at the time of the centenary of World War I with the leaders of the imperialist countries claiming that the war was fought by millions of young people in the defence of liberty and freedom, while the reality was that it was in the defence of the right to robbery and conquest by the big powers.

Using duplicity and disinformation as their main tool of propaganda, the imperialists again pose their activities in various parts of the world as defence of democracy and values, while the people of the world can clearly see what is what.  It is worth noting at this time that the working class world over has the responsibility to marshal its resources and combat the imperialists and come to the defence of the people of the world, to fight chauvinism and narrow mindedness and to be wary of traps set by the imperialists.  The working class must unite around an anti-war platform and save mankind from the disasters that the imperialists have in store for the peoples of the world.  The working class must strive to establish socialism and defeat the predatory world system of the imperialists.  I second the sentiments expressed in this article.

Sincerely,

S. Nair, Kochi
