71 years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

US imperialism remains the fountainhead of fascism and war

The people of the world and in particular, the people of Japan will never forgive the US imperialists for one of the gravest crimes they committed against humanity – the dropping of atom bombs over two towns in Japan, Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and Nagasaki on August 9, 1945. The bomb the U.S. dropped on Hiroshima was made of uranium and killed about 140,000 people in the initial blast and, in total more than 237,000. The bomb it dropped on Nagasaki was made of plutonium and killed 8,500 people in the initial blast and eventually resulted in the deaths of more than 70,000 people due to exposure to radiation and injuries. Generations after that remain victims of the long-term effects of the radiation.

To this day the U.S. refuses to apologize for these war crimes. On a visit to Hiroshima on May 27, 2016, U.S. President Obama did not even acknowledge that the U.S. perpetrated the crimes, merely declaring that “death came from the sky.”

The US imperialists have justified these bombings, claiming that they saved millions of lives and were necessary for putting an end to World War II in the Pacific. This is a big lie. The reality, which is a well-known and well-documented fact by now, is that when the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japanese imperialism had already lost the war and was on the verge of surrender to the allied forces led by the Soviet Union and US. The conditions for this surrender had been created by the struggle of millions of peoples of China, Vietnam, Korea, Burma, Malaya, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, and last but not the least, the great contribution of the Soviet Union, which sent a million red army men to liberate Manchuria (part of China) from the Japanese yoke in August 1945. The US had carpet bombed most of the cities of Japan, sparing no military targets. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen as targets, because these two cities had been spared carpet bombing, with the aim of testing the impact of the atom bombs!

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were meant to be a message to the socialist Soviet Union and the peoples of Europe and Asia and the rest of the world, who had sacrificed so much to liberate humanity from the scourge of German fascism and Japanese militarism that henceforth US imperialism would take on the mantle of fascism, aggression and war. It would lead world imperialism in its onslaught against the revolutionary and liberation struggles of the world’s peoples. The past 71 years confirm that US imperialism has indeed played this role to the hilt.

Right after World War II, US imperialist forces crushed the revolutionary uprising of the Greek people. The US established the NATO military alliance and set up military bases all over Western Europe to crush any revolutionary uprising and to threaten the Soviet Union and the countries of People’s Democracies. In Asia, US imperialism supported the Kuomintang of Chang Kai Shek against the Chinese people’s liberation struggle. It divided Korea and occupied South Korea, against the wishes of the Korean people. US forces occupied Japan and till today they have a military base in Okinawa, which is opposed by the Japanese people. When the French colonialists were defeated by the heroic Vietnamese liberation struggle, the US imperialists marched in to take their place, occupied South Vietnam, and carried on one of the longest and bloodiest wars in history, killing millions of Vietnamese, until they were finally defeated in 1975. In Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Laos, US forces unleashed bloody wars to crush the liberation struggles of the peoples.

In the period of the Cold War, US imperialism and Soviet social imperialism colluded and contended, to put down the revolutionary and liberation struggles of the peoples. Following the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War, US imperialism has aggressively advanced to build a unipolar world under its dictate. Together with the imperialists of Western Europe, US imperialism declared, through the Paris Charter, that all countries must subscribe to the US prescription of multi-party democracy and ”free market economy”.. Any country that did not do so, but chose to adopt its own economic and political systems would be declared a “rogue state”, a “threat to democracy” and militarily attacked and destroyed.

The Yugoslav Federation was dismembered. Afghanistan and Iraq were militarily attacked, occupied and devastated. Crippling sanctions were imposed on Cuba and Iran for several years. North Korea continues to be hounded by US imperialism as “a grave threat to mankind”, with American missiles lined up to attack that country at any moment. In the name of “safeguarding democracy”, US imperialism has organised coloured “revolutions” to bring about regime change in several countries of Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. It has led its NATO allies to militarily intervene in and devastate Libya, Yemen, Syria and other countries, with Syrian people continuing to be targets of US military aerial bombings. It has been instrumental in installing a puppet government in Ukraine, with the aim of blocking and encircling Russia.

US imperialism is aggressively pushing its Asia-Pivot policy. It is steadily increasing its aggressive military presence in the Indian Ocean and Asia-Pacific region, posing a grave threat to peace and security here. It has military pacts with Japan and other countries in this region and regularly conducts joint military exercises with various countries in this region including India, with a view to containing China.

The Japanese people have been vigorously opposing their government’s military alliance with the US. It was reported that this year, on August 6, thousands of people gathered at Hiroshima in Japan, to condemn the Japanese government’s new military legislation that allows Japan to go to war in other parts of the world, in aid of an ally, namely the US.

The Obama regime has overseen an unprecedented expansion of anti-ballistic missile (ABM) defence systems inside the U.S., in the Pacific, aboard naval craft in the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean and in Eastern Europe and now hopes to install the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea. The U.S. expansion of its ABM systems marks a dramatic escalation of the nuclear arms race.

Confronted with the fascist terror, wars of aggression and occupation unleashed by US imperialism, its threats and blackmail through its deadly nuclear and conventional weapons arsenal, the working class and freedom loving peoples all over the world have fought, and continue to fight against imperialism, fascism and war, for revolution and national liberation, for the right to determine their own destiny. On the 71st anniversary of the dropping of nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, CGPI calls upon the Indian people to resolutely oppose the growing military alliance between India and US imperialism, and foil the diabolical and aggressive plans of US imperialism.
