Kisan March to Parliament 28th-30th November announced

The All India Kisan Sabha on announced on 4th November that a ‘Kisan march’ would be organised in the national capital from 28th to 30th November to press for the pending demands of the farmers. This would be organised under the aegis of the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), a conglomerate of 260 farmers’ bodies across the country, to press for their various demands.

The ‘Long March’ will be held from a place some 100 km from Delhi to Parliament, on the lines of the ‘Nashik-Mumbai Long March’ that was held earlier in 2018.

The demand for a special 21-day joint session of parliament where the peasants’ concerns can be heard is gaining ground. Already, two bills – The Farmers’ Freedom from Indebtedness Bill (2018) and The Farmers’ Right to Guaranteed Remunerative Minimum Support Prices for Agricultural Commodities Bill (2018) – have been placed before parliament and are awaiting discussion.

This all-India protests of the peasantry follows repeated protests of peasantry across the country, with several all-India manifestations such as the one in September 2018. One of the major issues has been the betrayal by the BJP government of its 2014 electoral promises to farmers with respect to the hike in minimum support prices (MSPs) of 22 mandated crops and fair and remunerative price (FRP) of sugarcane. These promises have been proved “a hoax”. While agricultural inputs costs have increased many folds, farmer are not getting due price of their products.

The organisers of the march have written to the President of India Ram Nath Kovind. In their letter, they have said that the agrarian crisis has now reached “civilizational proportions”. “… successive governments have witnessed the destruction of the countryside and the unchecked destitution of farmers and yet little has been done to alleviate their misery. They have witnessed the deepening misery of the dispossessed, including the death by suicide of well over 300,000 farmers these past 20 years.”
