  • Doctors in Mumbai have come out strongly opposing the rules issued by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) on May 10, which require them to physically check a patient for Covid-19 symptoms before prescribing tests, otherwise their licences will be cancelled.
  • The present crisis has exposed the gross inadequacy of the public health system

It has exposed private hospitals as useless in the struggle against this virus

Yet the government pursues privatisation instead of investing in public health care

  • The Joint COVID-19 Task Force, consisting of experts of the Indian Public Health Association (IPHA), the Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPSM) & the Indian Association of Epidemiologists (IAE), issued a second statement on the Covid-19 pandemic in India, on May 25, 2020.

MEL is reproducing the statement in PDF format.

  • Two years after Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS) collapsed, the Bombay High Court passed an order on 21 April 2020 dismissing the Union Government’s ban on the auditors of the company – Deloitte Haskins & Sells and BSR & Associates (a KPMG affiliate). The auditors had been charged with collaborating with the management of the company to conceal facts and fraudulently falsifying the books of accounts and financial statements from the financial years 2014-2018.
  • Protests spread across the US, Europe and Asia

Protesters rally on Foley Square of lower Mahattan in New York,

Following the brutal killing of an African American by the police in Minneapolis, USA, widespread protests have been continuing since the last week of May in Minneapolis and other cities of the USA. Protests have been reported in over 150 cities of the US in the first week of June, including New York, Albuquerque, Denver, Chicago, Louisville, Los Angeles, and Oakland.

  • On June 10, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the loosening of coronavirus lockdown despite large scale opposition from four biggest trade unions and many local authorities. The first ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have refused to implement the new policy. The government has changed its slogan from “Stay Home, Protect the NHS and Save lives” to “Stay Alert, Defeat Coronavirus and Save Lives”.
  • I wish to write a few lines about the article, “Resolutely oppose US interference” that appeared in the June 1, 2020 issue of Mazdoor Ekta Lehar. This article is very appropriate, right and timely. It explains very well how US imperialism has destroyed many countries for its narrow self-interest and for that it has used diverse means such as regime change, ”pro-democracy” movements, false promises of people’s freedom, and so on.
  • I am writing to thank you for the important article entitled "US President Trump offers to "mediate" between India and China: Resolutely oppose US interference" in the June 1-15, 2020 issue of MEL available on the Party web-site.  I am writing to join you in this opposition.
  • Being connected to farming closely, I have seen how the conditions of farmers have been going from bad to worse year after year for many decades. The simple and rightful demand of farmers of MSP for crop procurement to be fixed at 1.5 times of total production cost, has been ignored by every successive government. Now the government wants to scrap the Mandi act and leave farmers at the mercy of big retail companies.
  • In the last two months more than 200 healthcare workers in Mumbai have been infected by the Covid-19 virus due to inadequate personal protection equipment. Both doctors and nurses have been working for weeks together without any break due to increasing number of infections. Yet, they are not provided proper food and water. There has been no improvement in their condition despite a number of representations.

  • Nurses at Mumbai's civic-run KEM Hospital protested demanding a separate ward for colleagues infected by the Covid-19

The Resident Doctors’ Association of King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Mumbai has highlighted the inhuman conditions in which the doctors treating Covid-19 patients are compelled to work, in an open letter to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

  • The Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) has protested against the harassment and ill treatment that the crew of the Air India Airbus flight, bound to Moscow for an evacuation operation, had to face at the hands of the health officials at Delhi Airport on May 30.

  • US once more reveals its reactionary warmongering nature

Following the failed US imperialist plot to invade Venezuela and to capture or assassinate its President Nicolas Maduro in early May, a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council was convened on May 20th to discuss this blatant attack on Venezuela’s sovereignty.  Venezuela’s Permanent Representative to the UN placed clear facts and arguments before the assembly to show how the outrageous plot was in violation of several resolutions of the UNSC and deserved to be condemned as such.

  • I am writing in response to the article entitled `Package for industries and businesses:  Acceleration of “Privatization and Concentration of Capital' carried in the June 1-15 web-edition of MEL.  This is an extremely important article.
  • Minneapolis_28_May_2020-1_web

Protests continue to rage for the fourth day in Minneapolis and other cities of the USA including New York, Albuquerque, Denver, Chicago, Louisville, Los Angeles, and Oakland, following the brutal killing of a black man on May 25, 2020. People all across the USA are very angry with the brutal killing of a black man in police custody and are not only demanding justice for him, but an end to all such acts of police brutality for which the police forces across the USA are notorious.

  • Resolutely oppose US interference

On May 27, US President Trump publicly declared: “We have informed both India and China that the US is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute”.

The declaration of the US President signals the intent of the US to try to utilize the ongoing border clashes between India and China to advance its own interests in this region. This poses great danger to both India and China, and to peace in Asia. It must be resolutely opposed by the people of India, China, and all other countries of this region.
