Celebrating Castro’s life

Sir,

I was delighted to read the article carried in the September 1-15, 2016 issue of MEL reporting the celebrations of the 90th birth of Com. Fidel Castro a little while ago. Indeed, I would like to echo the sentiment that the Cuban Revolution continues to be a beacon for freedom loving peoples around the world, and indeed it is the personality of Com. Fidel Castro that is often identified with this. I also agree that Com. Castro `…was a product of the wave of anti-colonial, anti-imperialist national liberation struggles that swept Africa, Asia, Latina America and the Caribbean in the second half of the twentieth century.

The word and deed of Comrade Fidel Castro encapsulates the struggle of the exploited and oppressed of the whole world. What more fitting tribute can be paid to Com. Castro on this momentous occasion? Let it not be forgotten that in the 58 years that have elapsed since the overthrow of the Batista regime that US imperialism has left no stone unturned in trying to defeat the revolution, and it is the achievement of the Cuban people and their revolutionary zeal that has prevented this from happening. Now that the regime sanction has run its course, the Obama Administration has changed tactics, but it is unlikely that the aims of US imperialism have changed, and it will continue to undermine the struggle.

The work of Com. Castro will forever be a touchstone for those who aim to safeguard the revolution and to continue on the path of revolution in Cuba. In this regard, I would like to join in wishing Com. Castro many more long years and second your rousing call ‘Long live Comrade Fidel Castro!’

Sincerely,

A. Narayan, Bangalore
