Deepening agrarian crisis

Sir,

Sir,

Re: `The bourgeoisie has no solution to the deepening agrarian crisis’ in the April 16-30, 2015 issue of MEL, one of the important tasks of communists is to study and analyze and explain in simple terms what the most important and pressing problems of the day are, with the tools of Marxism-Leninism at its disposal. While the way forward may depend on whether one is in the bourgeois camp or in the revolutionary camp, the touchstone is the scientific analysis of the situation, and the analysis that cannot be challenged by anyone, irrespective of ideological disposition.

For instance, the article points out that, whereas 7 years ago, the Manmohan Singh Government had announced a loan waiver for the peasantry as the panacea to the problems that it faces, at present the problems have got even worse, thereby implying that the root cause of the agrarian crisis has not been addressed. The article also provides indubitable evidence of the nature of the agrarian crisis in all nooks and crannies of the country and the widening scope of the crises, and its all-enveloping nature and the fact that it is encircling regions where it had not been acute before. For instance, the article points out that in Maharashtra, the Vidarbha region has been superseded by the Marathwada region as far as the vice like grip of the crisis is concerned.

The article points out the seasonal nature of suicides of farmers, establishing beyond any reasonable doubt the cause of the suicides as being that of indebtedness.  The article proceeds with a detailed analysis of the root causes of the ruination of agriculture, which the stranglehold of the bourgeoisie on the economy of the country and the dictating of all terms by the bourgeoisie.  Indeed, the cycle of indebtedness and sale of land the flight of population to cities all go hand in hand as the bourgeoisie seeks to entrench itself in the countryside.

Capitalism seeks to maximize its profit through control of all aspects of life. Thus the product of this inhuman system is there for everyone to see.  Indeed, one must mark the words in the article that “Left to the bourgeoisie, the future of the peasantry is one in which the vast majority will be ruined,..a small minority will join the ranks of the bourgeoisie.’’ Such being the case, the article elaborates on what the working class vision for agriculture is. It is one in which the peasantry will march hand in hand in with the working class and guarantee itself a rising standard of living, and one in which the surplus of agriculture will be for the benefit of the majority, one in which land will not be a commodity, but rather a common property of all, so as to guarantee the welfare of all. Let us all work together for that day, when the peasantry will live in dignity like the working people. Let us unite to overthrown the oppressive rule of capital.

Sincerely,

S. Nair, Kochi
