The statement of the CC of the CGPI dated 21-8-2015 entitled 'Unite against Capital-centred Reforms! Forward with the Agenda of the Working Class!', which was issued as a prelude to the All-India General Strike of 2-9-2015 notes that the strike is a mark of protest by the toiling majority of people against the rulers of the country, and hence everyone interested in the welfare of the country must join in the protest.
The statement points out that life experience has shown that policy statements of the Government mean nothing but a disaster for the people of country, since they say one thing while meaning the exact opposite. In particular, the present period is one of entrenchment of capitalism and has brought poverty on an unparalleled scale to the people of the country. At this time the Government, just like past governments is only interested in helping maximize profits for the leaders of the biggest business houses of the country. This is the real `Team India' that the Government represents, while claiming to speak for its 125 crore people. At the heart of Government policy are policy changes, especially those aimed at changing labour laws to help the big businesses carry out even more egregious exploitation. Also, policy changes are being aimed at the advancement of capitalism in agriculture with the destruction of whatever is left of the peasantry. Thus all policies are anti-people and pro-capital.
The statement points out that there is an alternative to these reforms and that is the agenda of the Working Class. The statement puts forward what this agenda is. This is a human-centred agenda, with several important building blocks such as satisfying of basic needs, providing of education and health-care to name a few. This can only be achieved through a deep transformation of society and through the establishing of a new system.
At this point, the key steps that are needed include the forging of the unity of the working people, cutting across all partisan lines. The rise of consciousness is an important building block of the new society that is being born. Let us echo the call of our martyrs and strive towards this goal.
