Resolute struggle of the Vijaya Hospital Nurses

Close to 400 nurses of three hospitals run by the Vijaya group in Chennai have gone on strike in support of their demand for better salaries. The nurses are demanding an increase in basic pay from Rs. 6320 to Rs. 15000 per month, an annual increment of 15% of basic pay and hike in night time allowance.

The nurses have taken out processions and staged sit-in-strikes to underscore their demands. They have resolutely stuck to their struggle despite various pressure tactics by the management like cutting off power supply and food to the hostels, where the nurses staged sit-in strikes. The hospital management is using all kinds of tactics to break the strike, including physical attacks, but the nurses are not giving up their struggle.

Nurses are invariably super-exploited by the managements of hospitals and clinics, using the fact that these are working women, many of them living far away from their homes. However, they have never taken their exploitation and oppression lying down and always fought for their rights and dignity. Just recently, there have been major struggles of nurses in Apollo and other hospitals of Chennai. Mazdoor Ekta Lehar extends its full support to the striking nurses of Vijaya Hospitals of Chennai.
