Production has been shut down in the five units of Eastern Medikit Ltd, located in Gurgaon, since May 18, 2012. The workers of the company, under the leadership of the All India Medikit Employees Unions, have been waging a struggle against this illegal lockout over the last 5 months.
It is to be noted that power and water supply have been cut in the factory. Only 3-4 security guards have been attending to duty. All the workers have been marking their presece at their shifts. The workers demonstrated outside the District Commissioner’s Office on September 18, 2012. The management has not paid a paisa of the workers’ earned salaries since September 2012. In this period, two workers have committed suicide due to economic pressures. Families of 1200 workers have had to face dire circumstances due to the illegal lockout.
Eastern Medikit commenced production in 1988 from a small rented plot in Azadpur. The company went on to establish 5 branches on the basis of super-exploitation of the workers. There 1200 permanent employees and about 300 stock-keepers. All the workers have put in 15-22 years in the company. The company’s management set up a new plant in Dehradun (Uttarakhand) about 3 years ago, with a view to maximizing their returns. With full production under way there, the management decided on an unannounced lock out the Gurgaon units. The management has not paid up the workers’ provident fund and ESI since the last one and a half years. The government has not taken any measures against the company for this robbery.
Since the implementation of the New Economic Policy reforms in 1991, the capitalist State has given the capitalists full rein to rob the workers. First claim has been allowed to the fulfillment of monopoly capitalist greed through suppression of workers’ rights. Workers have been continuously fighting for their rights in the Gurgaon-Manesar belt. The ruling classes have been hubristically denying the workers their rights through the use of oppressive physical force. Every government has been giving away land at throwaway prices, tax relief and subsidies to the capitalists. One sees that the capitalists take the benefit of concessions from one state and then go to another state, ready to violate all the labour laws.
Due to the ongoing struggle of the workers of Eastern Medikit, the Labour Department of Haryana government had issued orders on September 7, 2012 to the company management to lift the illegal lockout. However, the state government did not take any specific measures to ensure that the lockout is lifted.
