Sangam Vihar in South Delhi is one of Asia’s largest kutchi colony. The working class constitutes a majority of the residents. Residents face serious problems; they are not provided with basic services such as drinking water and sanitation (toilets and drainage). Electricity was provided only post-privatisation. Despite people themselves trying to maintain them, roads and lanes are as good as absent; the government has done nothing towards it.

Both the Congress and the BJP view Sangam Vihar residents as a vote bank and not as people who deserve to be provided with basic services. The Communist Ghadar Party of India is furthering its efforts to increase the political consciousness and to organise the residents. In the course of this work, the Party organised a public meeting on 3rd February 2013, giving the call to “establish neighbourhood and mohalla committees”,“Ensure the safety of women and people.” Besides the activists of Purogami Mahila Sangathan and Hind Naujavan Ekta Sabha, a number of college and school students participated in the meeting. Youth took responsibility for organising and conducting the meeting and collecting donations.

Young and old had participated enthusiastically in a competition held before this meeting. The subject for the essay competition was, “Discrimination between boys and girls”, “Is India a democracy?”, and “Problems in your locality”. The drawing competition was on illustration of bazaar, parks, etc. Prizes for the winners of these competitions were distributed at the meeting.

Speakers from Purogami Mahila Sangathan, Hind Naujavan Ekta Sabha and Lok Raj Sangathan addressed the meeting. They elaborated on the formation of committees and pointed out that the people have little means to secure their rights and ensure their safety. The basic reason for this is that people do not have political power. The present system cannot guarantee their rights or ensure their security. The Congress and BJP serve only the capitalists.

The speakers explained how the present system can neither ensure the security of women nor does it respect them. This system is the source of all oppression in this society and responsible for keeping it alive. This is the basis of this system. The speakers exhorted the youth to get organised to fight for their rights.

The meeting ended on an enthusiastic note.
