The workers of Diamond Engineering Company in Mambakkam, Tamilnadu began an indefinite hunger strike on November 12, 2015. The workers have been carrying on this form of protest in the conditions of torrential rains. Hearing news of the deterioration of conditions of some of the fasting workers, the family members of the workers carried out a road roko at Mambakkan.

It may recalled that earlier in the year, when the workers of the company decided to organise themselves in a union of their choice, the management dismissed 345 workers of the company. In addition, it hoisted false criminal cases on 27 workers. When the workers approached the Labour Department for resolution of the dispute, they found the labour department completely ineffectual in defending their rights. Finally, the Labour Department declared that the management had failed to appear for a single hearing of the case.

The Thalambur police denied the workers the right to carry out the hunger strike in front of the factory. The workers are carrying on their fast at Samathuvapuram, 1 km away from the plant. The workers are organised under the banner of the AICCTU.
