The Communist Ghadar Party of India condemns the brutal attack by the Delhi police on post graduate students on December 9, 2015. Hundreds of students from JNU, Delhi University, Allahabad University, Aligarh Muslim University and other universities who were marching from the University Grants Commission (UGC) office to parliament were attacked by the police who rained lathis and water cannons on them. Many students were seriously injured in the attack. Hundreds of students were detained by the police overnight.

The march to parliament was organized by a number of student organizations, including the AISA and AISF. It was part of a prolonged struggle of the students against the recent decision of the University Grants Commission to cut research funding to M phil students and PhD scholars. The UGC has decided to eliminate non-NET fellowships, which affect the future of thousands of post graduate students who presently avail of the scholarships. Students from different universities of Delhi — JNU, DU, Jamia Millia Islamia and Ambedkar University — have been carrying on a sit in inside the UGC premises for the past 45 days, as part of their agitation.

The students are demanding that not only the UGC not cancel the fellowships currently being given, but actually raise the amount of fellowship from the paltry amount of Rs 5000 for M Phil students and Rs 8000 for Phd scholars.

The protesting students are at the same time raising their voice against the privatization and commercialisation of higher education.
