Mumbai workers march against attacks on their rights


Hundreds of workers marched into Azad Maidan, Mumbai from 2 PM on 10th of March 2016 in support of the 12 point charter of demands raised by the Trade Unions Coordination Committee. They belonged to Railways, Docks, Sailors, Municipal and Bank workers, Insurance and telecom workers, anganwadi and contract workers etc. The meeting was chaired by Dr.Vivek Monteiro of CITU and Mr.Vishwas Utagi of AIBEA. The unions participating were AITUC, CITU, HMS, INTUC, BKS (Bharatiya Kamgar Sena), Kamgar Ekta Chalwal, as well as the unions representing the workers from the various sectors.

Speaker after speaker denounced the anti worker anti-social policies of the present government. The majority of the speakers also denounced the attempts to suppress the agitating students of JNU by slapping sedition charges on them. Speaker after speaker denounced the authoritarian attitude of the police and explained to the workers the sham nature of democracy that exists in India.

It was also announced that on April 20th more than a lakh workers would descend on Azad Maidan as part of the country wide demonstrations and they would not be content on being caged in “Azad Maidan” but would march to Mantralaya.
