The Gujarat government has come out in support of the General Motors Management. It has clamped Section 144 in the area to prevent workers from assembling and preventing strike breaking activities. It has declared the strike as illegal.
The strikers have threatened to begin a sit-in at the plant. They will also move the High Court against prohibitory orders, a union spokesman said. There are 900 workers working in the plant. The Company is pressuring the temporary workers and apprentices to return to work.
The Halol facility near Vadodara has a capacity to manufacture 85,000 units per annum ue to the strike, the company was able to make only 70 units a day, against 190 scheduled. The workers have gone on strike demanding a new wage agreement Their demands include payment for overtime work according to the Factory Act, reduction of work load, revocation of the management's practice of transferring union leaders to dealers' network and ‘forcing' unskilled or semi-skilled ones to work.
