We deeply mourn the passing away of Hugo Chavez

Hugo Chavez, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, passed away in Caracas on March 5, 2013, after a heroic and prolonged battle against cancer. His passing away is an irreparable loss to the people of Venezuela and all the peoples of the Americas, and to the anti-imperialist movement of the world's peoples.

The Communist Ghadar Party of India sends its deepest condolences to the family of President Chavez, to the Vice President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, to the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, and to the people of Venezuela.

The life and deed of Hugo Chavez show his unwavering commitment to the defence of the national sovereignty of Venezuela, the struggle against imperialist domination and plunder of Latin America, and for peace on the world scale. He was an unwavering opponent of US imperialism and its aggressive, war mongering drive worldwide.  He used every international forum to expose the machinations of US imperialism and its allies against the world’s peoples.

For a period of 15 years, Hugo Chavez was repeatedly reelected as President of Venezuela, in spite of coup attempts and other open and hidden efforts of US imperialism to overthrow his government.

Chavez and the United Socialist Party of Venezuela played an important role in building the anti-imperialist unity of the peoples and countries of Latin America in defence of their economic and political sovereignty. Such organizations as the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA), the Bank of the South, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Council of Latin American Defence — are amongst the many projects which have benefited the peoples of all the Americas and the Caribbean in defending their independence and sovereignty. They testify to Hugo Chavez's single minded commitment to give the peoples of the region mechanisms to defend their sovereignty and peace; and to end the domination of the IMF, World Bank and other imperialist institutions of neo-colonialism.

The untimely death of Hugo Chavez at the young age of 58 is a tremendous loss to the people of Venezuela and the whole world who are waging a relentless struggle against imperialism and for peace. We are convinced that the people of Venezuela will turn their grief into strength and continue to pursue the path of defending their sovereignty and fighting relentlessly against imperialism and for world peace.

Working class representatives from all over the country are gathering on 4th September, at a time when a titanic struggle is going on in our country. The struggle is between the majority of toiling and exploited people and a minority of exploiters. It is between the majority whose labour expands wealth and the minority who enjoy the fruits of wealth creation on the basis of their private property and positions of power.
