Protest meeting against attacks on people's democratic rights

On February 25, 2016, hundreds of workers, women, youth, students, and intellectuals participated in a militant public meeting at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi at the call of seven communist and left parties — Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, All India Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) and Communist Ghadar Party of India.

Com. Pran Sharma, Delhi Secretary, SUCI (Communist)
Com. Dharmendar Kumar, Delhi Secretary, All India Forward Bloc

Comrade Shatrujit Singh, Delhi Secretary, Revolutionary Socialist Party

The public meeting had been organised as part of a three day "Virodh Diwas" call given by these parties to protest against the savage onslaught on democratic rights including the right to dissent and the right to organise in university campuses. In particular the "Virodh Diwas" had been organised in defence of the courageous students of Jawaharlal Nehru University who are being painted as "anti-national" through a deliberate disinformation campaign by the government and sections of the monopoly controlled media.

The public meeting in one voice condemned the slapping of sedition charges on six students of JNU. It demanded the immediate dropping of sedition charges on all these students, and the release of the three student leaders currently in police custody — Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya. It demanded punishment against those who had attacked Kanhaiya Kumar brutally under the watchful eyes of the police in the premises of the Patiala house courts. The public meeting called for the repeal of the colonial, fascist, anti people sedition law.

The placards carried by those participating in the rally boldly declared  "Condemn the persecution of university students!", "Withdraw all the false cases against the JNU students!", "Those responsible for the attacks on the JNU students and for the poisonous propaganda must be punished!", "Down with state terrorism!", "Oppose attacks on the right to conscience!", "Source of growing fascism — the monopoly capitalist class!", , "Repeal the  fascist, anti people, sedition law!", "It is the rulers who are acting against the unity and solidarity of our people!", "long live the unity and solidarity of our people!"

The speakers who addressed the meeting included, Comrade Sudhakar Reddy and Prof Varshney from the CPI, Comrades Brinda Karat and K M Tiwari from CPI(M), Comrade Prakash Rao of the CGPI, Comrades Ravi and Ramji Rao from CPI(ML)-Liberation. Comrades Ramesh Sharma and Pran Sharma from the SUCI(C), Comrade Dharmendra from AIFB and Comrade Shatrujit Singh from the RSP,

All the speakers condemned the government, the Delhi police, the Indian State and the JNU administration for targeting the JNU students. They pointed out that wild allegations have been made without investigation, disciplinary actions have been taken without giving a chance to the students to explain and they are being kept in detention under charges of sedition. They pointed out that the government is pushing the agenda of the big capitalist houses and is launching attacks after attacks on the workers, farmers and other toiling people. It is adopting the fascist method of repeating lies to cause divisions among the people so as to push its agenda.

Speakers pointed out that it was the ruling class itself that had been continuously attacking the unity and solidarity of the people of our country by deliberately fomenting divisions on the basis of religion, language, caste, region, etc. This same ruling class is diabolically blaming communists — those who are fighters for the cause of the toiling and oppressed — for allegedly conspiring to break the unity of the people!

Everyone was of the view that there is urgent need to build the broadest unity of people. We communists must be at the head of the struggle to forge and defend the precious unity and solidarity of our people from the attacks of the ruling class and the imperialists. We have to work together to build a new India which will ensure prosperity and protection for all.

Manifesto 2014Unite around the program to reconstitute the Indian Republic and reorient the economy to ensure prosperity and protection for all!

There is growing realisation among workers, peasants and other self-employed people that the program of liberalisation and privatisation only serves to enrich an exploiting minority at their expense. Mass resistance is growing to this anti-worker, anti-peasant and anti-national program.
