Condemn imperialist-led pressure against Iran!

The Indian state’s stand, joining the big power chorus against Iran’s nuclear program, is utterly hypocritical and shameful. India itself had till recently been the target of the policy of nuclear discrimination, and was at the receiving end of big power sanctions and disapproval for having gone ahead and developed its nuclear program.

On November 27, the US imperialists and other powers pushed another resolution through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) condemning Iran for its nuclear program.  The excuse for this renewed pressure was Iran’s voluntary declaration of the existence of a second uranium enrichment plant in the mountains near the city of Qom. The strongly-worded resolution threatened that if Iran persisted with its uranium enrichment program, sanctions would be applied against it.  This time, the resolution had the backing of Russia and China, which in the past had not supported such resolutions. The Indian government, as on previous occasions, backed the resolution against Iran. The big powers have also been trying to force a “deal” on Iran by which it would have to ship the bulk of its low-enrichment uranium to Russia and France, which would then further enrich it and turn it into uranium fuel rods suitable for medical purposes and then send these back to Iran.  US officials have openly said that the idea behind this proposal is to ensure that Iran does not have enough enriched uranium on its soil to manufacture a weapon.

Because of the clear stand that Iran has taken for many years now against US imperialism and its activities, the US has never let up its hostile offensive against Iran.  The latest stick with which it is trying to bludgeon Iran is its nuclear program. As long as nuclear weapons remain in the possession of many powers around the globe, Iran as a sovereign country has as much right as any other to pursue a nuclear program. Iran is not in possession of a nuclear weapon, and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful, civilian purposes. However, powers like the US, which themselves have repeatedly launched wars of aggression and have even used nuclear weapons against other countries, arrogantly insist that only they have the right to possess nuclear weapons and even nuclear technology, while others do not.

Then with what justification can the Indian government say that Iran, another sovereign country, has no such right? In pursuit of its own big power ambitions, the Indian state has hitched its wagon to that of the US imperialists, and is aligning its policies more and more in keeping with those of the US.

In response to the latest offensive against it, the Iranian government has declared that it will not be deterred by such resolutions or sanctions, and will pursue the development of its nuclear program as it sees fit.
