Resolutely oppose the flagrant violation of Syria's sovereignty by the imperialists

In complete and cynical disregard for the principle of respecting the independence and sovereignty of countries and people, US imperialism and its allies have stepped up their heinous military and political campaign to overthrow the Syrian government and establish their complete domination over that country. The course being pursued by US imperialism and its allies is based solely on the justification that "might is right"; that the US has the "right" by virtue of its military strength to refashion a new world order under its total domination regardless of its consequences for the freedom and independence of peoples and for world peace.

In the second week of August 2012, heavy fighting continued to ravage Aleppo, the largest city of Syria, between government forces and the Anglo-American imperialist backed rebel forces. As the violent siege of Aleppo continues, the risk of further western intervention is growing.

In early August 2012, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution with 133 votes in favour, denouncing the Syrian government for its role in the crisis. This was the culmination of a massive and hectic propaganda campaign carried out by supporters of the US – led proxy war against Syria, aimed at creating conditions for more direct intervention. Nevertheless, 12 countries opposed the resolution while 31 abstained, indicating that a large number of countries are wary of the consequences of the reckless aggressive warmongering course on which US imperialism has embarked.

On 9th August 2012, Iran hosted a conference of 29 countries including Russia, China, Cuba, Iraq, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Algeria, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Zimbabwe in Teheran. A joint statement after the conference called on the parties involved in Syria to halt the violence for three months in order to hold talks and emphasised “the need to uphold the principles of international law regarding non-intervention in domestic affairs of other countries and the respect of their national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and urging to cease the hostilities by putting an end to any military assistance to armed groups and warning of the dangerous impacts of support for armed groups on regional peace and security.” Iran and other countries also said they would use fora, such as the emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) being held in Meccaon August 14 & 15, 2012, to foster dialogues to deal with the situation in the region.

Only a few days before the vote in the UN General Assembly, it was revealed that US President Obama had personally signed an order for US intelligence agencies to give covert aid to anti-government forces in Syria. British Foreign Secretary William Hague also confirmed that Britain is giving covert support to anti-government forces in Syria. It has already been widely reported that Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are arming oppositional forces in Syria. Moreover, the western media was also forced to admit that the “opposition” forces being backed by the Anglo- Americans and their allies are not mere “pro-democracy” fighters. On the contrary, many of them have engaged in mass killings of political opponents and participated in attacks on the Syrian civilian population as well. Some of these “opposition” groups have previously been declared to be “terrorists” by the US and its allies, thus demonstrating that the Anglo- Americans are stopping at nothing to force a regime change in Syria.

Earlier, in July, 2012, imperialist agents carried out attacks against key members of the Syrian government and succeeded in assassinating some of its top leaders. Imperialist-supported groups have also mounted severe cyber-attacks on the Syrian government and temporarily hacked their websites.

The US imperialists and their allies claim that it is necessary to intervene in Syria in order to support “democracy” against a “dictatorial” regime.  The point of principle, however, is that the kind of political system a country must have or the nature of a country’s government and its policies are strictly matters for the people of that country to decide upon, without foreign interference.

Since the imperialists started organising, equipping and inciting opposition elements in Syria to destabilise the country, tens of thousands of people have been injured and killed in the conflict. Towns have been laid waste, and tens of thousands of people have been uprooted. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that 1.5 million Syrians are in urgent need of aid.

The continued attacks against Syria are part of a most dangerous pattern started by US imperialism and its allies about eleven years ago, with the NATO – led assault on Afghanistan in 2001; that country continues to be occupied and strife torn till today. They then mounted a vicious campaign against the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq in 2002, accusing that government of harbouring “weapons of mass destruction”, and created the conditions for attacking that country the following year. Iraq too is still reeling under US occupation. The US imperialists and their allies are now training their sights on Iran and Syria because the governments in both these countries have strongly opposed the imperialist designs in the region of West Asia.  The imperialists are striving to force “regime changes” in those countries and bring in regimes that are more favourably disposed towards them. Because the Assad government in Syria is a close ally of Iran, it is seen as standing directly in the way of the plans of US imperialism and its allies to strengthen their domination of the strategic and oil-rich region of West Asia.

Despite all their tall claims, it is clear that the aim of the Anglo – American imperialists and their allies is not to bring democracy or freedom to the Syrian people. It is to establish their control over Syria in pursuit of their own aims. This is precisely what they have done in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya and what they wish to do in Iran as well. It is also noteworthy that other countries are not remaining silent in the face of demagogy and dastardly activities of the Anglo-American imperialists and their allies.

The Communist Ghadar Party unequivocally condemns the assassinations, cyber-attacks, bombings and escalation of the imperialist provocations against Syria. The imperialists have no right to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries, on any pretext. The government of India must be condemned for refusing to firmly stand in defence of the freedom and independence of Syria, and against imperialist intervention in the international fora like the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council.

Working class representatives from all over the country are gathering on 4th September, at a time when a titanic struggle is going on in our country. The struggle is between the majority of toiling and exploited people and a minority of exploiters. It is between the majority whose labour expands wealth and the minority who enjoy the fruits of wealth creation on the basis of their private property and positions of power.
