The Al-Rahma Islamic Centre in Muswell Hill, North London, a Somali community centre, was burnt down in the early hours of June 5, 2013, in what is widely suspected to be a racist attack. Investigating police officers have reported that the letters “EDL”, implying a state organized racist group called the English Defence League, were found sprayed on the two-storey building which partially collapsed as a result of the fire. Although no one was present in the building at the time of the incident and no one has been reported injured, the Somali community is gripped with shock and fear. People across all communities have roundly condemned the attack.
The capitalist media has been spreading the propaganda that the arson attack on the Somali community centre may have been in reaction to the killing of a British soldier in Woolwich, south-east London on May 22. On June 1, state organized racist and fascist gangs such as the EDL and the British National Party held marches in London, provoking racist hatred against people of the Islamic community.
The British state, like other bourgeoisie states, is well-known for sponsoring racist groups, spreading racist hatred and organizing racist attacks against various immigrant communities. The attempts of the British bourgeoisie to intensify its economic attacks against the British working class and people and severely cut back on social welfare expenditure is being met increasingly by the united and powerful struggles of all sections of the working people. In this situation, such racist attacks serve the bourgeoisie and its state in smashing the unity of the working class. It cannot be ignored that precisely at these times when the British working class, cutting across national origins, is waging a powerful struggle against the anti working class policies of the government, that the British capitalist class is unleashing racist violence on the people.
