The US imperialists and its allies are stepping up their intervention in Syria in pursuit of their plan for regime change in that country.
On May 27, 2013, the European Union of 27 states took the decision to lift the arms embargo on Syria which was imposed from May 31, 2011. In other words, from June 1, 2013, European states can officially arm the rebel forces in Syria working to overthrow the Assad regime. In the same meeting, the European Union decided to continue the regime of economic sanctions against Syria to increase the hardships of the Syrian people. Justifying the lifting of the arms embargo, a prominent leader of the EU said, that as economic sanctions were proving ineffective in regime change, proactive arming of the rebel forces was necessary!
The EU decision comes following the demand of the US government that every one of the 27 European Ambassadors posted in the US appear at the State Department for “consultations to avoid any misunderstandings about what the White House was expecting at the upcoming EU meeting.” US Secretary of State John Kerry had been urging the EU to end the arms embargo so as to expedite weapon shipments to the rebels. Britain, France and Turkey pushed through the EU decision with support from Spain and Italy, while Germany took a neutral stand. Some countries like the Czech Republic were opposed to lifting the arms embargo. Since EU decisions have to be unanimous, it was decided to allow the May 31, 2011 decision on arms embargo to lapse, paving the way for the lifting of the embargo! Such is the way the Anglo American imperialists and their allies brought the EU around to their positions!
The US President has asked the US Joint Chiefs of Staff to draft plans for the imposition of a no-fly zone to be enforced by Washington and its key NATO allies, Britain and France. The US and NATO are planning military exercises called “Eager Lion” in which 15,000 US and NATO troops will participate, along with those of other allies, in Jordan. This is expected to allow the US to pre position military hardware for a possible military intervention in Syria. Meanwhile, the Syrian National Coalition, the rebel front backed by Washington, spent five days at the end of May holding a conference in Istanbul, Turkey.
The Obama administration, along with its allies, has been making repeated claims that the Syrian government has been using chemical weapons against the rebels and the civilian population, and that “if proved” it would directly militarily intervene in Syria. This propaganda is similar to the one made to justify the invasion of Iraq, that Iraq had a stockpile of weapons of mass destruction, which was proved to be false later. In fact, on May 6, 2013, the UN’s top human rights investigator, Carla de Ponte, substantiated allegations by the Syrian government that it was the rebel side that had used chemical weapons. She said that there was use of Sarin gas “on the part of the opposition, not by the government”.
With these developments, it is clear that the US is not interested in a negotiated peaceful settlement of the civil war in Syria, which is the purported aim of a proposed Peace Conference slated to be held in Geneva in June, Earlier, both the US and Russia had formally backed this Conference.
The US imperialists and its NATO allies are relentlessly pursuing their aim of carrying out regime change in Syria, as part of their plan to ensure complete domination of West Asia. Mazdoor Ekta Lehar strongly condemns the US imperialists intervention in Syria and upholds the right of the Syrian people and their government to defend their freedom and sovereignty from foreign imperialist aggression.
