US imperialism and its allies have launched yet another overt and covert operation to carry out regime change in Venezuela. Ever since the Bolivarian revolution led by the late President Hugo Chavez overthrew the positions of US imperialism and its allies in Venezuela, the imperialists have used every weapon in their arsenal, including the arming, inciting and financing of its agencies within that country, to overthrow the gains of the revolution and reverse the growing anti imperialist tide sweeping across many countries of Latin America.
The imperialists decided to launch their latest operation on February 12, 2014, the centenary of a student uprising which was part of the Venezuelan war of independence. On that day, fascist groups, masked and armed, carried out violent provocations under the full glare of the imperialist media, even while lakhs of youth and students were peacefully celebrating the anniversary, through marches in different towns of the country. The death of three people and injuries to dozens was magnified by the imperialist owned media and the monopoly controlled opposition media, to portray that a civil war had broken out.
Between February 12, 2014 and March 5, 2014, the Venezuelan people came out in massive demonstrations in support of their government and their freedom and independence. On the first anniversary of the death of Hugo Chavez, March 5, 2014, the Venezuelan people and government organized massive actions in profound manifestations of their love for freedom and progress and to signify their intention to defend the gains of the revolution. The anniversary event was attended by leaders of numerous Latin American countries including Raul Castro, President of Cuba.
Precisely on this day, the government of Panama organized a provocation at the inspiration of the US. It called for a meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), a discredited body organized by US imperialism to impose its domination over Latin America, to intervene in Venezuela. The meeting was a failure. Most of the countries of Latin America have formed their alternate Union, to defend their freedom and sovereignty, in the face of US threats. The Venezuelan government immediately expelled the Panama officials from their embassy in Venezuela.
The Venezuelan people and their government headed by President Nicolás Maduro have responded with firmness to the imperialist sponsored violence.
The government has arrested the leading instigators of the anarchy, and started their trial.
It has expelled US officials from the US embassy who were coordinating the "revolution".
It has expelled the CNN correspondents who have been spreading disinformation. This includes spreading of footage of violence in other countries, and claiming it to be in Venezuela.
US imperialism has been trying to get a group of countries in the Americas together, as the Organisation of American States (OAS), to advance its imperialist domination in the Americas. Venezuela along with Cuba, has been focal to creation of an alternative to the Organisation of American States (OAS), to resist the US imperialists' efforts to assert their domination and to defend the freedom and sovereignty of the countries of the region.
What is being organised in Venezuela is according to a set method. The imperialists covertly ask their agencies to carry out deliberate acts of violence, targeting the state and its police and armed forces, and ensure that an atmosphere of anarchy and violence is created. The imperialist media meanwhile overtly magnifies the activities of the counter revolutionaries and agencies, makes out that a "revolution" is taking place, and in general influences international opinion, whose making it controls, to support regime change. This is what has been going on in the past year in Ukraine, Thailand and Egypt, to name a few countries.
Barrack Obama, in a deliberately planned speech in Mexico accused the Venezuelan government of diverting from its internal problems. The Venezuelan government replied — "The declaration that independent governments and countries of the world are waiting for is one in which the government of the United States ... explains why it finances, encourages and defends opposition leaders that promote violence in our country.". This is what any government that defends the sovereignty of its people must necessarily do.
US undercover and overt agencies have been providing full support to the “opposition” in Venezuela. The US imperialists, who have considered Latin America as their backyard, have never been reconciled to allowing Latin American countries to follow an independent political and economic path not attuned to US imperialism. Venezuela has been in the forefront of these countries. A summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), a union of all countries of North and South America excluding the US and Canada was held in Havana at the end of January 2014. It is perhaps no coincidence that the present wave of attacks in Venezuela began just a few days later, in early February 2014.
The struggle of the Venezuelan people and government in defence of the independence and sovereignty of their country is an important component of the struggle of the world's peoples against imperialism and imperialist war. MEL fully supports this struggle.
