Hectic preparations for war
Leaders of NATO member states held their summit meeting in Britain in the town of Newport in Wales, on September 4-5, 2014. Over 80 leaders, both those of the countries who are part of this war mongering military alliance, and their "alliance partners" participated in this Summit. This Summit was held in the backdrop of the imperialist sponsored civil war in Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and other countries. The militarist speeches made by the key leaders of NATO — the representatives of US, Britain, and France — couched in demagogic phrases of "defence of sovereignty", "war against terrorism" etc. — revealed that the US imperialist led NATO is planning to further embroil the peoples of Europe, Asia and North Africa in wars to redraw maps and extend the domination of these imperialist powers.
The declaration issued at the end of the Summit clearly defined the three main focus areas of the NATO at the present time – Ukraine and Georgia in Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. In Ukraine, it is the US imperialists and their allies who have organized a coup to bring to power a regime of fascists which will integrate that country into NATO, and act as a spearhead to encircle and attack Russia. In West Asia, the US imperialists and their European and West Asian allies including Israel and Saudi Arabia, are trying to redraw the map of the region to smash the sovereign states of Iraq and Syria. In North Africa, after organizing bloodbath in Libya, the Anglo American French imperialists are trying to recolonise the countries of the region by spreading anarchy and violence and acting as "peace makers".
The Summit approved the NATO Readiness Action Plan to respond to the “challenges posed by Russia and their strategic implications”. It set up a Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) to “respond to challenges that arise, particularly at the periphery of NATO’s territory”. NATO members announced the formation of a 4000 strong rapid action force with headquarters in the Baltic countries, bordering Russia. NATO chief Rasmussen said that this was being created to send a message that “if enemies attack one ally, they will be attacking the whole alliance”.
The declaration condemned Russia for ‘illegal intervention’ and ‘backing separatists’ in Ukraine. It supported the sanctions imposed by the EU, the G7 and others on Russia.
The declaration gave full support to the Ukrainian puppet regime in its war against its own people. It may be noted that at this time, the armed forces of this puppet regime is carrying out genocide of the people in the eastern part of the country, in the name of crushing ‘separatists’.
The declaration stressed on increasing the defence budgets of all members of the Alliance, a stronger defence industry in Europe and greater defence industrial cooperation within Europe and across the Atlantic. It justified the deployment of patriot missiles to ‘defend the population and territory of Turkey’.
Other areas of strategic concern referred to in the declaration included Afghanistan, Mali and the Sahel-Sahara region, the Balkans and the Mediterranean region. It referred to the strategic nuclear forces of the Alliance, particularly US, UK and France. It spoke of enhancing the missile defence capability of NATO. It endorsed the NATO Framework Nations Concept within which groups of member states would work multinationally for the joint development of forces.
The NATO is a warmongering, military alliance, dominated by the US, UK and France. It was set up to establish US imperialist military domination over Europe and its primary aim is to crush any potential threat from the working class and toiling masses of the member states to imperialist domination and plunder. At the same time, it is a tool to expand the domination of US imperialism and its imperialist allies in Europe, North Africa, West Asia, and other regions of the world. In the present global scenario -- where the US imperialists and their allies are going all out to intervene in various countries in order to secure and expand their imperialist interests, by fomenting anarchy and political instability and creating conditions for ‘regime change’, by arming and financing various organizations to carry out such activities as to justify outright military intervention by the US and NATO allies – the NATO summit represents a concerted effort by the US and its major imperialist allies to line up other member countries in the preparations for yet another global war, in the name of ‘transatlantic security’.
