NATO intensifies war preparations against Russia

The meeting of Defence ministers of the NATO alliance held in Brussels, Belgium on June 24-25 announced stepping up of war preparations against Russia.

The strength of NATO’s Response Force deployed in the Russian border will be raised to 40,000 troops from the current level of 13,000. On June 23, a day before the meeting, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter announced the positioning of hundreds of American tanks, military vehicles and heavy artillery pieces in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.

This buildup of troops and military equipment in the countries bordering Russia is part of a long-term reorientation of NATO directed against Russia. It is a clear threat of war against Russia.

Polish Defense Minister Tomasz Siemoniak spelled out the meaning of the US-NATO policy declaring: “The peaceful period after the Second World War is over.” In other words, US imperialism and its allies are preparing to attack Russia.

The Defence Ministers decided to establish six new NATO command centers. These will be located in Lativa, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. These new centers will facilitate strategic planning, military exercises and the deployment of the newly formed Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF). It was announced that the US would contribute bombers, fighter jets, surveillance drones, Special Operations troops and other military resources to the VJTF.

The defense ministers also agreed to grant the supreme allied commander of NATO forces in Europe, US General Phillip Breedlove the authority to deploy troops on much shorter notice in order to facilitate the operations of the VJTF.

The Brussels meeting highlighted the mounting danger of the conflict with Russia escalating into a nuclear war. A meeting of NATO’s Nuclear Planning Group is expected to take place later this year. According to reports, among the issues to be discussed is an “enhanced role for nuclear weapons in NATO military exercises.”

The NATO military exercises held this year were aimed at carrying out serious provocations against Russia. The US carried out bombing exercises in Latvia, close to the Russian border, and in Poland and Lithuania, US paratroopers practiced seizing of airports.

Russia has taken note of the intensification of war preparations by the US and its allies. It has begun to take counter measures do defend its sovereignty.

An extremely dangerous situation is being created for the peoples of Russia, Europe and the rest of the world as a result of the US plans to encircle and conquer Russia. The events show that US imperialism is ready to hurl humanity into a new world war in the striving to establish its domination over the whole world.  The CGPI condemns the intensified war preparations being carried out by US imperialism and NATO against Russia.

Working class representatives from all over the country are gathering on 4th September, at a time when a titanic struggle is going on in our country. The struggle is between the majority of toiling and exploited people and a minority of exploiters. It is between the majority whose labour expands wealth and the minority who enjoy the fruits of wealth creation on the basis of their private property and positions of power.
