Central Trade Unions Convention

The Editor, MEL.

I was delighted to read the detailed report carried in the August 16-31, 2017 issue of MEL entitled `All India Convention of workers resolves to step up the struggle against the anti-worker, anti-people assault of the ruling class.' It was heartening to read that over 6000 delegates attended the Convention in the heart of Delhi which was jointly organized by all the leading and national workers unions and confederations. This is a signal of the growing unity among the ranks of the working class, the revolutionary class that has the historical mission of liberating India from the jaws of the hated bourgeoisie. It was also heartening to read of the unanimous condemnation of the policies of the government that has given a free hand to the biggest monopolies and industrial houses to plunder the labour and land of its resources.

A reading of the excerpts provided in the article of the Declaration brings into sharp focus the line of march of the working class at this point. Of note is the recognition of the arrogance of the Government that ignores the 12-point Charter of Demands on minimum wage, social security, workers' status and pay and facilities, and struggle against privatization. Under the prevailaing capitalist system dominated by the monopoly houses, there is very little job creation, increasing cost of living and cost of basic necessities, including transportation and medical care, dismantling of various Provident Fund organization and grabbing of the wealth of workers, rapid increase in rate of privatization including of railway stations, attacks of public sector banks and insurance companies. The Convention noted with satisfaction the united fight against such assaults.

It is also heartening to see that support extended by the Convention to peasant struggles, our partners in the struggle for liberation. The report also gives the list of de facto resolutions of the Convention to deepen the struggle and its call to all working people in the country irrespective of affiliation and to make the immediate programs that the Convention supports a success.

The truth is that there IS an alternative. The alternative is to reorient the economy to fulfil people’s needs instead of fulfilling capitalist greed. This is the program for the Navnirman of India.

Manifesto 2014Unite around the program to reconstitute the Indian Republic and reorient the economy to ensure prosperity and protection for all!

There is growing realisation among workers, peasants and other self-employed people that the program of liberalisation and privatisation only serves to enrich an exploiting minority at their expense. Mass resistance is growing to this anti-worker, anti-peasant and anti-national program.
