Press Release July 20, 2004

Condemn State Terrorism against the people of Manipur!
Support the just struggle of the Manipuri people against state repression!

The Communist Ghadar Party of India condemns the brutal rape and murder of 32-year-old Thangjam Ningol Manorama by personnel of the 17 Assam Rifles. The CGPI hails the militant ongoing struggle of the Meira Pabi Organisations as well as the broad masses of people of Manipur against the ongoing state repression. The CGPI condemns the state repression that has been unleashed in the form of curfew and firings on protesting people in the state of Manipur.

The Communist Ghadar Party of India has consistantly upheld the view that there is no justification for state terrorism. Manipur has been under the jackboots of the Indian Armed Forces continuosly since 1980. The aspirations of the people have been routinely crushed by the armed forces and legal justification has been provided by the violation of all rights by the infamous Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, which itself is a continuation of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Ordinance Promulgated by the British in 1942.

The Communist Ghadar Party of India demands immediate arrest and prosecution of the Personnel of the 17 Assam Rifles responsible for the rape and murder of Thangjam Manorama, immediate withdrawal of the 17 Assam Rifles in particular and the Armed Forces in general from Manipur. The CGPI calls on the people to step up the struggle for the repeal of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, as well as the revocation of the Disturbed Area status for the whole of Manipur.

National and human rights need to be defended kals | Thu 29/Jul/04 - 22:01
An unfortunate replay for the umpteenth time of the brutality of the armed forces of India aginst the peoples of the northeast! Such behaviour does not even find a cursory mention by the so called national press!
Every one who respects human rights and democracy must raise her or his voice against such brutality. We cannot be free if some of our peoples are incarcerated and brutalised. Defence of rights of nations and humans requires one and all to participate!
Communists should fight for Repealing AFSPA 1958 mukta | Fri 23/Jul/04 - 09:42
I also attended the demonstration organised by Manipuri students. It had large paticipation of girls and women. One striking feature of the demonstration was presence of a prominent CPM member Com. Brinda Karat, who was at the head of the demonstation. CPM and all the Communist MPs must take up the issue in the Parliament and fight for repeal of all the draconian laws in general and Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 in particular, as well as the revocation of the Disturbed Area status for the whole of Manipur, as highlighted in the article above. It must also demand immediate arrest and prosecution of the Personnel of the 17 Assam Rifles responsible for the rape and murder of Thangjam Manorama.
Stop state terror in Manipur! nivritti | Fri 23/Jul/04 - 09:28
It is shameful and shocking that women of this country have to demonstrate naked to highlight the plight of their sisters and brothers in the face of terror unleased by the India State and its army on its own people.

The brutal rape and killing of our sister Thangjam Ningol Manorama by the personnels of 17 Assam Rifels in Manipur clearly demonstrates grave situation in Manipur. The blood is not just on 17 Assam Rifle, but on all those who control this State, the bourgeosie, the Congress Party, the Prime Minister - who claims to provide governance with "human face", and all those who defend the Indian State and repression of people of Manipur, and North East, under one pretext or the other - like insurgency and “unity and integrity" of India.
I had the opportunity to attend a rally orgainised by Students organisations of Manipur and North-Eastern states along with various peoples organisations in Delhi. It was truly symbolic of the unity of the people of this land. We are one people, We are waging one struggle. The enemy is one. Our aim is one. We want the liberation of India from imperialism, capitalism and the colonial legacy. Long live the struggle, for which Thangjam Manorama is the latest martyr!
