Fountainhead of fascism and war

Sir,

This is being written in response to the article entitled ’71 years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki’ in the August 16-31, 2016 issue of MEL that carries the byline `US imperialism remains the fountainhead of fascism and war’. One has to see the connection between the actions that took place over seven decades ago, and the events and horrors that are unfolding in front of our eyes on a daily basis.

No one would deny that the world is in a period of acute chaos today, as the period that was ushered in a little over two and a half decades ago when the East bloc and Soviet Union collapsed and the bi-polar division of the world came to an end, continues until today. As this happened, the US that led the Anglo-American camp tried to cash in and lead a uni-polar world, but has not succeeded, but has ushered in a period of permanent wars, especially in the middle East and in Afghanistan and in parts of Africa on an unparalleled scale. This is related to the fact that the US took on the mantle of fascism and used the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to send a signal to the world that it would stop at nothing in its goal of world domination. By using these weapons unnecessarily at a time when the surrender of Japan was imminent, the US was telling its arch-rival the Soviet Union that it would not hesitate to do the same to other enemies. This led to the arms race and detente, with the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union due to revisionism, social imperialism, and capitulation and bleeding of its economy dry by the arms race.

During that period, the US supported counter-revolutions in Greece and elsewhere, destabilised governments in Italy and supported military juntas in Latin America on an unparalleled scale. It was the supporter of the hated apartheid South Africa and had client states all over the world, including Taiwan, South Korea to name a couple. It supported all kinds of forces in Afghanistan and later came to occupy it directly after the 9/11 attacks of 2001, launched wars of aggression in Iraq and now supports civil wars in Libya, and Syria and is up to mischief everywhere. The Obama administration has used violence on an unparalleled scale the details of which are present even in the bourgeois press. Starting with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the US has used the bogus fig leaf of decimating millions of people under the pretext of safeguarding US lives, or ‘civilization’ or ‘civilized values’ or ‘freedom’ and so on, while the reality is something else. Given this, it is natural that peace-loving peoples all over the world oppose the US and its foreign policies and want to save mankind from certain disaster. The people of India must demand of its government that it has no military ties with this hated military power.

Sincerely,

S. Nair, Kochi
