No sooner than the Modi government began its second term at the Centre, it announced the sale of the property belonging to the people – the Indian Railways. The government is making all efforts to implement a 100-day action plan of privatising the railways.

Railway employees have been waging their struggle over a long period in support of their demands for filling vacant posts, resolution of the problems faced by the locomen, the elimination of the anomalies in the Seventh Pay Commission’s recommendations, etc. However, instead of listening to these demands, the Modi government is going ahead with the privatisation of railways.

The government has decided to hand over operations of important trains to private operators. Alongside this, it has decided to hand over management of the super-fast trains to private companies.

Addressing the meeting, speakers pointed out that the privatisation of railways was an issue not just for the railway workers but for 100 crore people of India. Railways belong to the people and it cannot be handed over to private entities. The government is beginning with the corporatisation the production units of the railways and then plans to move on to privatising the same. Railway employees have rejected this plan outright.

With one voice, all speakers committed to keep up the struggle against privatisation.
